Remember to use expansion fittings, remember that the expansion fittings need to be properly supported and so do any outlet/inlet boxes or conduit bodies you may be using, and remember to lay down a run of Buried Electrical Wire tape 12" below grade as you backfill the trench. In your situation I would suggest just running the UF-B in a 24" deep trench and then sleeve it into 1 1/4" Sch 80 PVC where it comes out of the ground at the ends. Table 300.5 requires that it be buried 24" deep rather than the 18" required for PVC, but that 18" is to the top of the conduit rather than the bottom of the hole so it's not as bad as it sounds. If all of your conduit is going to be underground or otherwise protected, you can get away with 1" Sch 40 PVC and still be code-compliant. If any part of your conduit run is located such that an inspector might consider it "subject to physical damage," you need to run 1 1/4" pipe and you need to use Sch 80 PVC at least for the exposed parts. 1" Sch 80 only has 0.688 in 2 of space in it (of which we can only use 0.365 in 2, which is not enough) but 1 1/4" gives us a healthy 1.237 in 2, and we can use up to 0.656 in 2 of that, which is plenty! GearIT 10/3 10 AWG Portable Power Cable (100 Feet - 3 Conductor) SJOOW 300V 10 Gauge Electric Wire for Motor Leads, Portable Lights, Battery Charger, Stage Lights and Machinery -100ft Electrical Cord. Indeed, in the 53% column of the table we see it can accommodate single wires up to 0.441 in 2 in cross section.įor Schedule 80, the smallest trade size that gives us what we need is 1 1/4". Chapter 9, Table 4 gives us the information we need.įor Schedule 40, the smallest trade size with an interior cross-sectional area of 0.742 in 2 is 1", at 0.832 in 2. It's easy to look up both options though, so that's what we'll do. Sch 80 has a smaller interior cross-section than Sch 40 (due to the thicker walls) and therefore can't hold as much wire-if any part of your conduit run is aboveground in an area where people could kick it, drive a car into it, hit it with a shovel, etc. However, if you are going to come up out of the ground at the ends of your run, those ends will probably be considered "subject to physical damage" so you would need to use Sch 80 at the ends, at a minimum. There is no requirement that you use Schedule 80 PVC just because you are burying it underground Schedule 40 is permitted. 0.42/0.53 is 0.742, so we're looking for a conduit that gives us at least 0.742 in 2 of space to work with. Chapter 9, Table 1 tells us that if we we are only running a single conductor, we are allowed to use up to 53% of the interior cross-sectional area of the conduit. output adjustable via potentiometer 3 in 1 dimming (010Vdc or 10V PWM. (727 mils is 0.727 inches diameter, pi*(.727/2) 2 = 0.42 in 2.) We are therefore looking for a conduit that can accommodate a single conductor with that cross-sectional area. Features : 3 3-wire without neutral / 340530VAC wide input range. (Other brands may vary slightly but not enough to matter.) That works out to a cross-sectional area of 0.42 square inches. (Chapter 9, Table 1, Note 9.) 10/3 UF-B has a major diameter of 727 mils, according to this PDF from Southwire. UF is a cable with an elliptical cross-section, and in the NEC we treat that for conduit fill purposes as if it were a single circular conductor with a diameter equal to the major diameter of the ellipse. 10/3 Romex wire is a type of Romex wire, that has unique construction features and electrical parameters. So, you want to run 10/3 UF in a conduit. (It's probably not the best way to do what you're doing, but it is permitted and your question does have an answer in the codebook.) I'm going to go ahead and just try to answer the question, instead of telling you that what you're proposing is dumb. Suggesting the burning scrap wire to remove the insulation will result in a ban.
